Ode to the (No) Selfie

OR A Buddhist Riddle on No Self (Annata, or Anatman)

If there’s no self
what’s the selfie?
And more importantly
Why the fuss over the selfie?

Some call it narcissistic fixation
Some call it a mental disorder
Soon there will be chemical pills to
combat this 21st century “self-obsession”

Selfie Excess Disorder, they will call it
To join the ranks of other disorders like

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Impulse Control Disorder (ICD)
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)
Boderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
Facebook Addition disorder (FAD)
Brief Psychotic Disorder (BPD)
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)

But I think every selfie is a great moment
a true 21st century post modern opportunity
when one can reflect on the self
to then self reflect on no self

If one is to reflect on no self
there has to be a self to reflect?

(Apparently, the idea of an unchanging, fixed, solid and whole “self” is a false one, according to the Buddha. A mere illusion. And it’s because we cling to this illusory sense of self that we suffer so much. So what’s the selfie then? Here I ponder and present my ode to what I think is a historical age, “the platinum age of the selfie.”)
